(with bamboo flute master Toki Tatara)
Le 6 octobre 2024 au national / 20hThe Nagata Shachu Japanese Taiko and Music Group is proud to present Kazé 風 (Wind), in collaboration with Japan’s master flutist, Toki Tatara, in Montreal on October 6th at the National. Tickets are available at: https://latribu-lenational.tuxedobillet.com/LeNational/nagata-shachu.
The show will seamlessly combine the worlds of shinobue (bamboo flute), taiko, and the three-stringed shamisen while exploring new possibilities for these traditional instruments.
Based in Toronto, Nagata Shachu has captivated audiences internationally with their fascinating and thrilling performances of Japanese drumming (taiko) since their formation in 1998. While rooted in the traditions of Japan’s folk drums, the ensemble’s primary goal is to rejuvenate this ancient art form by producing innovative and exciting music that seeks to create a new voice for taiko.
Equipped with an arsenal of taiko drums (including the massive O-Daiko drum), bamboo flutes, three-stringed shamisen, and a variety of gongs, cymbals, shakers, and wooden blocks, Nagata Shachu will take you on a musical journey beyond all borders.
Born in Kyoto, flutist Toki Tatara has dedicated her musical life to the exploration of bamboo flutes. She actively composes and performs several of her own compositions, having cultivated both traditional Japanese techniques and Western classical ones.
Nagata Shachu is unique in being the only group outside of Japan to receive sponsorship from four major Japanese drum manufacturers, a testament to their mastery of this art. They were awarded a commendation by Japan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2019 for promoting cultural exchange through art between Japan and Canada.
