World premiere for Sharp’s “50 Years of the Berlin Wall”

World premiere for Sharp’s new high-brightness display at the memorial ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the building of the Berlin Wall

An approx. 16 m2 video wall made up of the latest generation of Sharp monitors will give all the visitors a clear view of the events on the stage in HD quality. 50 years after the division of the city into East and West Berlin, the Berlin Wall Foundation is marking the anniversary with a memorial ceremony. On 13 August 2011 the victims of the division of Berlin and Germany will be remembered at the Berlin Wall Memorial. The extensive fringe programme of readings, exhibitions and film screenings will reach its climax at the commemorative event in Bernauer Strasse.

Berlin, August 2011 – The video wall, comprising 16 monitors from the new high-brightness PN-V602 series, is to be provided by Sharp Europe for the ceremonies marking the 50th anniversary of the building of the Berlin Wall. On the evenings of 11 and 12 August historical footage from the 1950s and 1960s on the subject of “Divided City, Divided Country” will be screened on the oversized video wall in the open-air cinema. “We are proud to be able to play a part in this nationally and internationally significant commemoration,” declares Peter Heins, Product and R&D Manager at Sharp Electronics Europe, explaining the reason for the electronics company’s involvement.

The central act of commemoration -“50 Years of the Berlin Wall” -will take place on the stage at the historic border strip in Bernauer Strasse on 13 August starting at 10 am. After the welcome by Dr. Axel Klausmeier, Director of the Berlin Wall Memorial, Federal President Christian Wulff and the Mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit will address the assembled audience. The programme will also include the escape report of a contemporary witness, an interdenominational service in the Chapel of Reconciliation and chaired discussions against a musical and artistic backdrop. To conclude the day’s proceedings, the documentary film “Mauerhaft”1, which was compiled from private film material relating to 13 August 1961, will be shown on the Sharp video wall.

“Our new PN-V602 high-brightness display is especially suitable for use in bright surroundings,” declares Heins. “Thanks to its extremely high brightness of 1500 candelas and an impressive colour depth, the monitor delivers high-contrast, brightly lit images, even in sunlight. This ensures that all the visitors to the memorial event will be able to experience the images shown on the video wall in outstanding picture quality.” The very thin bezel, measuring a mere 6.5 mm, and the additional mirror frames which reflect the display content mean that the transitions between the individual displays are almost invisible and therefore ensure a more or less continuous image. The Sharp PNV602 also has a local dimming function which guarantees an outstanding contrast ratio and extremely high brightness with especially low energy consumption. Local dimming allows individual LEDs to be specifically switched on and off. Thus, diodes in dark areas of the screen are automatically switched off, enabling an energy saving of 30% to 40% to be achieved, depending on the picture content. Furthermore, the local dimming function results in a very high-contrast picture with deep blacks and brilliant whites. “Its use as a video wall at the commemorative act for the 50th anniversary of the building of the Berlin Wall is the world premiere for our new high-brightness display. The official market launch will not take place until October of this year. We join the Berlin Wall Foundation, the City State of Berlin and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media, Minister of State Bernd Neumann, in looking forward to a memorable event,” reports Maximilian Huber, a member of the Board of Management of Sharp Electronics Europe.
