The <strong>Royal Opera House<\/strong> in London had the excellent idea of filming, during the 2023 revival (the fifth of this production), one of its most iconic shows: <em>L\u2019elisir d\u2019amore<\/em>, staged by French director <strong>Laurent Pelly<\/strong>, whose hilarious <em>La fille du r\u00e9giment<\/em> by the same <strong>Donizetti<\/strong> we have previously recommended.<\/p>\n<p>The setting is a rural 1950s Italy, among a community of agricultural workers. Advertising signs promote <strong>Dulcamara<\/strong>\u2019s magical elixir, said to cure both constipation and impotence. None other than the veteran <strong>Bryn Terfel<\/strong> dons the charlatan\u2019s costume. <strong>Nadine Sierra<\/strong> made her London debut on this occasion and charmed everyone. Her pairing with <strong>Liparit Avetisyan<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Nemorino<\/em> works wonderfully, while <strong>Boris Pinkhasovich<\/strong> delightfully hams up the macho bravado of <strong>Belcore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For us Quebecers, the added treat is seeing the brilliant <strong>Sarah Dufresne<\/strong> as <strong>Giannetta<\/strong> in a cast deftly led by conductor <strong>Sesto Quadrini<\/strong>. Playing on the richly warm-toned <em>London<\/em>, <em>ex-Boccherini<\/em><strong> Stradivarius<\/strong>, <strong>Soltani<\/strong> confirms his promise in a light and transparent reading of <strong>Schumann<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Concerto<\/em>, which he conducts from the cello with <strong>Camerata Salzburg<\/strong>. His sense of cantabile and legato is outstanding, and the music never gets bogged down.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Concerto<\/em> is accompanied by four short pieces adapted for cello and orchestra, and eight songs (including one by <strong>Clara Schumann<\/strong>) transcribed by <strong>Soltani<\/strong> for cello and piano. Meet <strong>Pene Pati<\/strong>. Hailing from Samoa and trained in New Zealand, the 37-year-old tenor is the closest thing we\u2019ve heard to <strong>Pavarotti<\/strong> in recent years. While not identical in voice, <strong>Pati<\/strong> shares his predecessor\u2019s radiant tone and vocal brilliance. We first heard him four years ago, and it\u2019s both thrilling and reassuring to witness the wisdom and quality with which his career is unfolding.<\/p>\n<p>He opens this recital with the iconic <em>Nessun dorma<\/em> from <em>Turandot<\/em>, setting the tone for a vibrant selection of French and Italian tenor arias that celebrate the sheer joy of beautiful singing. He\u2019s at his best in <strong>Puccini<\/strong>\u2019s <em>La Boh\u00e8me<\/em>, <strong>Massenet<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Werther<\/em>, and <strong>Gounod<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Faust<\/em>. Composed of eight singers, the ensemble has crafted a flawlessly blended sound. Their fusion and the ethereal purity of their voices lend themselves beautifully to dreamy, atmospheric music.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s contemporary choral repertoire abounds with music that borders on the neoclassical or ambient.
