This search is greatly simplified when the manufacturer offers us a family of products designed to work together. There\u2019s no need to search for the perfect match; it already exists. Some manufacturers already provide this solution, such as <strong>Naim<\/strong> and <strong>Nagra<\/strong>, often mentioned in these pages. <strong>Daniel Hertz<\/strong>, created by <strong>Mark Levinson<\/strong>, goes so far as to offer cables and connectors to use with its devices. Here, we present the <em>9000 Series<\/em> family from <strong>Audiolab<\/strong>, featuring three devices: the <em>9000N<\/em> streamer, the <em>9000CDT CD<\/em> transport, and the <em>9000A<\/em> amplifier. Let\u2019s explore them together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">The English company <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> was founded in 1983 by <strong>Philip Swift<\/strong> and <strong>Derek<\/strong> <strong>Scotland<\/strong> when they were both students, sharing an interest in creating high-fidelity components at reasonable prices with user-friendly simplicity. <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> introduced its first products with the <em>8000<\/em> series, starting with an integrated amplifier (<em>A<\/em>) and later adding an amplifier (<em>S<\/em>), a tuner (<em>T<\/em>), a phono preamplifier (<em>PPA<\/em>), and eventually the best monoblocks (<em>M<\/em>) available at that time. <strong>TAG McLaren<\/strong> acquired <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> in 1997, and it was later transferred to <strong>IAG<\/strong> in 2004 (alongside <strong>Luxman<\/strong>, <strong>Wharfedale<\/strong>, and <strong>Quad<\/strong>, to name a few). Today, <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> continues its mission to offer well-designed components that provide high-performance sound coupled with exceptional value. <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> offers the <em>6000<\/em>, <em>7000<\/em>, <em>8000<\/em>, and <em>9000<\/em> series. Launched a few months ago, the <em>9000<\/em> series represents the highest quality level offered by the manufacturer. The <em>9000A<\/em> delivers 100\u00a0W of power per channel at 8\u00a0ohms. The <em>9000A<\/em> is responsible for the <em>DAC<\/em> function of the <em>9000CDT<\/em> <em>CD<\/em> transport, simplifying the setup and avoiding duplication. The <strong>ESS<\/strong> <em>9038Pro<\/em> (32-bit) processor handles the digital-to-analog conversion. The amplifier features a 4.3-inch, 4-color <em>LCD<\/em> screen for configuration adjustments using the device\u2019s buttons or the remote control. This screen is also present on the other two devices evaluated here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">The <em>9000A<\/em> also has a device <em>MODE<\/em> selection button (preamplifier, amplifier, or integrated). At the back, the <em>9000A<\/em> is equipped with <em>XLR<\/em> and <em>RCA<\/em> inputs, a phono input (<em>MM<\/em>), as well as <em>Coax<\/em> and Optical digital inputs and <em>USB<\/em>. It supports <em>PCM<\/em> formats (max. 32\u00a0\/\u00a0768) and <em>DSD<\/em> (max. <em>DSD512<\/em>, exclusively on <em>USB<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">The <em>9000N<\/em> streamer is built on an <strong>ARM<\/strong> <em>Cortex-A53<\/em> processor running <em>Linux<\/em>. The internal <em>DAC<\/em> is also the <strong>ESS<\/strong> <em>9030PRO<\/em>. It supports most streaming platforms on the market and <em>MQA<\/em>. This streamer handles <em>PCM<\/em> formats (max. 32\u00a0\/\u00a0768) and <em>DSD<\/em> (max. <em>DSD512<\/em>). In addition to the <em>LCD<\/em> screen, there is a volume button that can be disengaged if you choose to control the volume only on the <em>9000A<\/em> amplifier, as well as an input selection button. At the back, the <em>9000N<\/em> has <em>Ethernet<\/em> and <em>USB-B<\/em> input connectors, as well as <em>RCA<\/em>, <em>XLR<\/em>, optical, and coaxial output connectors. An interesting new feature on this <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> streamer is <em>Gapless Playback<\/em>, allowing continuous playback between tracks. Many classical or progressive rock albums have pieces that seamlessly transition, and this is a new feature introduced by <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> in recent months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">The <em>9000CDT CD<\/em> transport allows for playing <em>CD<\/em>s or digitizing them to a <em>USB<\/em> drive. It can also read <em>HDD<\/em> formats under different <em>FAT<\/em> on the <em>USB<\/em> port. The <em>9000CDT<\/em> has coaxial and optical output ports. It can read <em>PCM<\/em> 48\u00a0kHz formats but will convert them to 44.1\u00a0kHz. The device is well-built, and no mechanical noise was noted during its use. Following <strong>Audiolab<\/strong>\u2019s recommendations, I connected the <em>9000N<\/em> streamer via <em>XLR<\/em> and the <em>9000CDT CD<\/em> transport via coaxial to the <em>9000A<\/em> amplifier. All devices come with the same comprehensive remote control, in addition to the free <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> <em>9000N<\/em> app for <strong>Apple<\/strong> and <strong>Google<\/strong> devices. Once everything was connected, I left the devices untouched for several days. The burn-in time took longer than usual, as I wanted to achieve the best musical result from this set. Satisfactory results were obtained after more than two weeks of burn-in. Be aware of this if you ever have the chance to listen to these devices. The <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> <em>9000A<\/em> amplifier also functions as a headphone amplifier with a dedicated amplification circuit for this purpose. I used <strong>Qobuz<\/strong> for this product review and created a playlist in the <em>9000N<\/em> app on my tablet. The <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> streamer is <strong>Roon<\/strong> <em>Ready<\/em>, but certification was not available during this test. The <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> <em>9000CDT CD<\/em> transport allows for digitizing <em>CD<\/em>s in addition to listening to them. It uses the <em>DAC<\/em> of the <em>9000A<\/em> because it is solely a <em>CD<\/em> transport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Listening Impressions<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong>I allowed myself the pleasure of rediscovering the <strong>Festival du Son et de l\u2019Image<\/strong> (<strong>FSI<\/strong>) <strong>1999<\/strong> album in its physical version. This official <strong>FSI<\/strong> <em>CD<\/em> was distributed for free to the early visitors, thanks to the generosity of the salon and <strong>Quebec Audio<\/strong> (or <strong>TED Magazine<\/strong> nowadays) magazine. It is a selection of musical tracks from the early recordings of the <strong>Fidelio Audio<\/strong> company. I will always remember the recording sessions we conducted with my partner <strong>Ren\u00e9 Laflamme<\/strong>. I even appear on the album as an artist because the <strong>Anciens Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal<\/strong> are among the first musicians recorded by <strong>Fidelio Audio<\/strong> (now <strong>Fidelio Music<\/strong>). In my humble opinion, the masterpiece is <em>Tallulah<\/em>, recorded live at the <strong>L\u2019Air du Temps<\/strong> jazz bar in Old Montreal, unfortunately now closed. The bass clarinet solo in this piece is surprising due to its unique timbre produced by the metal and wood of the instrument and its wide range. The <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> <em>9000CDT<\/em> and the <em>DAC<\/em> of the <em>9000A<\/em> faithfully reveal, without any coloration, all the subtleties of the instrument and the audience reactions during this performance. The imaging is precise, and no instrument is pushed to the forefront, as some devices tend to do, unfortunately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">In the album <em>Officium<\/em> under the <strong>ECM<\/strong> label, the saxophone and the <strong>Hilliard Ensemble<\/strong>\u2019s male voice quartet blend their harmonies, enchanting us with selected pieces from the polyphonic repertoire of early and Renaissance music. I recall attending the concert this ensemble gave at the <strong>Notre-Dame Basilica<\/strong> in Old Montreal as part of the <strong>Montreal International Jazz Festival<\/strong>. The <strong>Hilliard Ensemble<\/strong> singers and saxophonist <strong>Jan<\/strong> <strong>Garbarek<\/strong> walked around the church during their performance to offer interpretations under different reverberations, which almost become the ensemble\u2019s sixth musician. The musical track <em>Parce Mihi Domine<\/em> is an excellent introduction to the album. We immediately know the harmonic ranges we will be immersed in during the listening session. The piece is also presented in two other versions in the album, as is often the case in many jazz albums. The musical track <em>Beata Viscera<\/em> showcases the talent of the singers using harmonic or overtone singing, allowing a singer to produce two notes simultaneously. I was able to compare the <em>9000CDT<\/em> with the <em>9000N<\/em> since the digital version is also available in streaming. I noted a very slight difference in favor of the <em>CD<\/em> version, but it could be due to the streaming version\u2019s quality. The difference is truly minuscule. The opening musical track, <strong>Bloch<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Concerto Grosso No.1<\/em>, is exceptionally accompanied by a piano. <strong>Barber<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Adagio<\/em> is probably the most well-known piece on the album, and the interpretation is well-executed. Being performed here by a smaller ensemble allows the nuances of the score to be revealed. <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> allows us to appreciate the gems of the score and the overall result of the orchestra.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/9000N_Standard_Silver_4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-41953 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/9000N_Standard_Silver_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2160\" height=\"809\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/9000N_Standard_Silver_4.jpg 2160w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/9000N_Standard_Silver_4-647x242.jpg 647w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/9000N_Standard_Silver_4-890x333.jpg 890w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/9000N_Standard_Silver_4-768x288.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/9000N_Standard_Silver_4-1536x575.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/9000N_Standard_Silver_4-2048x767.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2160px) 100vw, 2160px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe album <em>After Hours<\/em> by the trio <strong>Previn<\/strong>\u00a0\/ <strong>Pass<\/strong>\u00a0\/ <strong>Brown<\/strong> is truly delightful. The fame of <strong>Joe Pass<\/strong> and <strong>Ray Brown<\/strong> is well-established, while we already knew that conductor <strong>Andr\u00e9 Previn<\/strong> is an excellent pianist, even though he had not made a jazz recording in 27\u00a0years! Surprisingly, most of the pieces presented on this <strong>Telarc<\/strong> album are first takes. The album is intimate with slower tempos than usual. The musical track <em>All the Things You Are<\/em> begins with <strong>Joe Pass<\/strong>\u2019s solo guitar. <strong>Ray Brown<\/strong> comes and supports him, and then <strong>Andr\u00e9 Previn<\/strong> joins them on the piano. We are simply enchanted by the harmonies delivered by these legendary musicians who seem to have played together their entire lives. <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> simply and faithfully delivers the music played here brilliantly. The musical track <em>Smoke Gets In Your Eyes<\/em> also deserves careful listening, as well as the piece <em>Laura<\/em> with an absolutely fantastic solo by <strong>Joe Pass<\/strong>. The <em>9000N<\/em> streamer and the <em>DAC<\/em> of the <em>9000A<\/em> do not add any color to the instrument timbres. The recording quality would need to match the interpretation\u2019s caliber, and <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> does not alter the result, presenting an honest image of what <strong>Telarc<\/strong> intended to produce here. These are attractive, well-built components, and the sound lives up to our expectations. If you want to buy your equipment from a single manufacturer, <strong>Audiolab<\/strong> delivers with an easy-to-use and install set that will provide you with years of enjoyment. You can also enjoy available upgrades without having to replace all your components. The <em>DAC<\/em> function is found in the <em>9000A<\/em> amplifier and the <em>9000N<\/em> streamer, and you can connect an external <em>DAC<\/em> if desired.
