{"id":41830,"date":"2024-02-13T13:14:55","date_gmt":"2024-02-13T18:14:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/?p=41830"},"modified":"2024-02-13T13:14:55","modified_gmt":"2024-02-13T18:14:55","slug":"monitor-audio-hyphn-loudspeaker-in-the-field-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/en\/monitor-audio-hyphn-loudspeaker-in-the-field-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Monitor Audio Hyphn Loudspeaker \u2013 In-the-Field Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">It\u2019s not often one gets a private listening session with a six-figure loudspeaker but my desire to get some personal time with <strong>Monitor Audio<\/strong>\u2019s all-new <em>Hyphn<\/em> flagship speaker was fulfilled this past November. The <em>Hyphn<\/em> was premiered in 2023 in commemoration of <strong>Monitor Audio<\/strong>\u2019s 50<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Anniversary that was achieved in\u00a02022. A year late but not really, as <strong>Monitor Audio<\/strong> did debut their <em>Concept\u00a050<\/em> prototype at the <strong>2022 Munich HiFi Show<\/strong>, for their 50<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0celebration and the <em>Hyphn<\/em> is the promised production model of the <em>Concept\u00a050<\/em>. Visually the <em>Concept\u00a050<\/em> and <em>Hyphn<\/em> are virtually identical but for the addition of the <em>Hyphn<\/em>\u2019s outrigger feet. On a sonic front, no doubt <strong>Monitor Audio<\/strong> has continued to refine their concept with the production <em>Hyphn<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\"><strong>Monitor Audio<\/strong> has put several years into the concept and <em>R&amp;D<\/em> for the <em>Hyphn<\/em>, taking a <em>cost-no-object<\/em> approach to the design and engineering. <strong>Monitor Audio<\/strong>\u2019s objectives was to produce the highest performing speaker possible, with a forward-looking perspective. Essentially a real world, top performing loudspeaker that is ready for today as well as tomorrow. The <em>Hyphn<\/em> looks both sleek and stylish, yet this form does follow performance and function. Beneath its relatively compact form is a 3-way 11-driver loudspeaker that is non-imposing with a contemporary-futuristic aesthetic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; color: #800000;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Lifestyle_White_1_lr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41814 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Lifestyle_White_1_lr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Lifestyle_White_1_lr.jpg 890w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Lifestyle_White_1_lr-647x400.jpg 647w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Lifestyle_White_1_lr-768x475.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How are they constructed?<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong>Each <em>Hyphn<\/em> loudspeaker is comprised of twin pillar cabinets (legs) that house two pairs (4) force-cancelled 8\u00a0inches <em>RDT\u00a0III<\/em> bass drivers. The bass drivers are mounted facing inwards in left\u00a0\/\u00a0right pairs set just above and below the horizontal level of the midrange-<em>tweeter<\/em> assembly (the <em>M-Array<\/em>). The central focus point of the bass drivers\u2019 output being in the gap between the legs of the <em>Hyphn<\/em>. The <em>M-Array<\/em> is a horizontal bridge structure fitted across the legs at the upper 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0of the loudspeaker. If you\u2019ve seen the movie <em>Interstellar<\/em>, I could not help thinking of <strong>TARS<\/strong> when looking at the <em>Hyphn<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image001_lr.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-41816\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image001_lr-269x647.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image001_lr-269x647.png 269w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image001_lr-768x1848.png 768w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image001_lr-638x1536.png 638w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image001_lr-851x2048.png 851w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image001_lr.png 890w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a>The <em>M-Array<\/em> contains 7\u00a0transducers: six 2\u201d\u00a0mid-range drivers that encircle a single 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0generation <strong><em>M<\/em><\/strong><em>icro <strong>P<\/strong>leated <strong>D<\/strong>iaphragm<\/em> (<em>MPD III<\/em>) tweeter and is a floating alloy structure that is affixed but separate from the twin pillar cabinet. The <em>M-Array<\/em> seamlessly blends the midrange and <em>tweeter<\/em>, into a virtual point source. The mid-range drivers themselves are full-bandwidth, capable of output without breakup from 100\u00a0Hz to over 10\u00a0kHz, with maximum reach above 20\u00a0kHz with up to 3\u00a0mm excursion; while together with the <em>tweeter<\/em>, the <em>M-Array<\/em> covers the frequencies from 350\u00a0Hz to 60\u00a0kHz. This near point source arrangement ensures seamless mid-to-tweet transition for maximum imaging and soundstage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">The <strong>Monitor Audio<\/strong> <em>Hyphn<\/em> cabinets are made of acrylic stone\u00a0&#8211; a combination of acrylic, minerals, and natural pigments with extremely high mineral content. The result is a very heavy and inert cabinet to house the multi-driver configuration. The materials allow for thinner walls than would typically be needed with <em>MDF<\/em>, permitting greater internal cabinet volume for the same outer dimensions. The construction of the <em>Hyphn<\/em> involves thermoforming the acrylic stone and hand polishing it to a fine finish, creating a discrete and unimposing structure where performance is the priority. <strong>Monitor Audio<\/strong> refers to the <em>Hyphn<\/em> as being the \u2018<em>shape of genius\u2019<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Let\u2019s look at the specifications<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong>With a sensitivity of just 86\u00a0dB and an impendence of 4\u00a0Ohm (nominal)\u00a0\/\u00a03.5\u00a0Ohm (minimum), the <em>Hyphn<\/em> calls for solid high-current amplification (recommended 200\u00a0\u2013 1600\u00a0Watts <em>RMS<\/em>). The <em>Hyphn<\/em> has a full range loudspeaker with a frequency response of 18\u00a0Hz to 60\u00a0kHz (-6\u00a0dB, in-room) and is capable of a very high maximum <em>SPL<\/em> of 129\u00a0dB @\u00a01\u00a0m. The modest 54\u00a0<sup>13<\/sup>\/<sub>16<\/sub>\u201d\u00a0x 19\u00a0\u00be\u201d\u00a0x 20\u00a0\u00bd\u201d hide the fact that the <em>Hyphn<\/em> is a very heavy loudspeaker, weighing 106.9\u00a0kg\u00a0\/ 235\u00a0lbs per loudspeaker, naked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Drawings_1_lr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-41820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Drawings_1_lr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Drawings_1_lr.jpg 890w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Drawings_1_lr-647x431.jpg 647w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Drawings_1_lr-825x550.jpg 825w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Drawings_1_lr-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Drawings_1_lr-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Three colour choices are available, including: Pure Satin White, Matte Black or Matte Heritage Green. The price of the <em>Hyphn<\/em> is \u00a370,000\u00a0\/ \u20ac92,500\u00a0\/ AU$135,000\u00a0\/ CAD$\u00a0130,000 per pair, making it the most expensive product and new flagship loudspeaker from <strong>Monitor Audio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Listening in the Field<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong>Though I did not get the privilege of hosting the <em>Hyphn<\/em> in my own listening room, I was given free reign with the <em>Hyphn<\/em> loudspeakers during a private multi-hour private listening session at a friendly dealer, namely <strong>EQ Audio Video<\/strong>. Over the past year, I\u2019ve visited <strong>EQ Audio Video<\/strong> several times and become accustomed to their large main audition room\u00a0\u2013 a purposefully designed and acoustic treated 17\u2019\u00a0(W)\u00a0x 21\u00a0\u00bd\u2019\u00a0(L) x 9\u201910\u201d\u00a0(H) space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1491_lr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-41821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1491_lr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1491_lr.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1491_lr-647x485.jpg 647w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1491_lr-733x550.jpg 733w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1491_lr-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">The system used for my auditing was comprised of a <em>MICHI<\/em> amplification\u00a0: a <em>P5 Series\u00a01<\/em> stereo preamplifier and <em>S5<\/em> stereo (dual mono) amplifier with a <strong>Musical Fidelity<\/strong> digital source chain\u00a0: <em>M6x<\/em> DAC, <em>Mx<\/em> Stream digital steamer, combined with a <strong><em>ROON<\/em><\/strong><em> Nucleus+<\/em>. The cabling was all from <strong>Audience<\/strong> and included the following models:\u00a0 <em>frontRow<\/em> <em>powerChord<\/em>; <em>frontRow<\/em> <em>XLR<\/em>, <em>StudioTWO USB<\/em> and; <em>AR12<\/em> conditioner. Last but not least, the full room acoustic treatments were from <strong>Viacoustic<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The music itself<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong>The track <em>Ambergris<\/em> (<strong>Tipper<\/strong>) from their <em>Fathoms<\/em> EP was one of the first tracks I listened to. With the volume up at an average of 85\u00a0dB, I was amazed by the incredibly tight and impactful bass notes. The experience was visceral. The dynamic power and control of the bass was amazing, maintaining great clarity in the pulsing notes and absent of any perceivable overhand or cabinet resonance. The images within the large soundstage floated in space with the <em>Hyphn<\/em> effectively stepping out of the picture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">On the track <em>Momma Sed<\/em> (<strong>Puscifer<\/strong>), I took note of the guitar textures, which were ever so apparent through the <em>Hyphn<\/em>. The bass notes were solid, both stiff and impactful, while the <em>Hyphn<\/em>\u2019s proficiency with delivering articulate bass across the low frequency spectrum was evident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1510_lr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-41823\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1510_lr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"315\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1510_lr.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1510_lr-485x647.jpg 485w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1510_lr-413x550.jpg 413w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1510_lr-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/a>The track <em>Human<\/em> (<strong>Sevdaliza<\/strong>) exhibited the <em>Hyphn<\/em>\u2019s ability to fill a room with sound, conveying an apparently unbounded soundstage that reached well beyond the speaker edges and going beyond the room walls. Bass articulation and composure again was obvious, the very low bass notes delivered with a concussive punch, exuding macro dynamic prowess.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><em>State of the Art A.E.I.OU.<\/em> (<strong>Jim James<\/strong>) through the <em>Hyphn<\/em> presented an incredibly deep soundstage with the <em>Hyphn<\/em>\u2019s showing their ability to disappear. The soundstage was grandiose, wrapping around and totally immersing me in the music. I loved the way that the <em>Hyphn<\/em> was able to render the sound of the guitars and the distortion effects\u00a0\u2013 clear without embellishment, my own notes stating\u2026<em>\u2019dirty good<\/em>\u2019. There was no rounding, softening or beautifying but rather unwavering transparency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">One of my old favourite demonstration tracks that I first heard perhaps twenty years ago was <em>Jazz Variants<\/em> (<strong>O-Zone Percussion Group<\/strong>). On this track, the <em>Hyphn<\/em>\u2019s capability with mass scale dynamics was once again proven\u00a0&#8211; the speakers unflinchingly pounding out the tympani in an anvil like manner, while relaying the skins textures and the resonance of the drums. Yet, it was also on this track that I took note of the delicacy and micro detail present in the <em>Hyphn<\/em>\u2019s rendering of the various bells, chimes, cymbals and percussion. Metallic tones were full, wholly developed, not only the shimmer and sparkle but the complex harmonics and timbre allowing one to easily distinguish bells, chimes, and cymbals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">Moving to the track <em>Norbu<\/em> (<strong>A. Filetta<\/strong>) I was taken aback by the lifelike presentation from the main vocal to the background child murmurings, bird chirps and the choir voices. The <em>Hyphn<\/em>\u2019s produced a sweeping sound field with impeccable clarity. The tympani strikes were thunderous and ground shaking yet delivered in a most believable manner, with great precision and control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_X-Ray_Cabinet_lr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-41826\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_X-Ray_Cabinet_lr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_X-Ray_Cabinet_lr.jpg 890w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_X-Ray_Cabinet_lr-647x392.jpg 647w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_X-Ray_Cabinet_lr-768x465.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I heard <strong>Eiv\u00f8r<\/strong> for the first time on the <em>Hyphn<\/em>, the track <em>Tr\u00f8llabundin<\/em> was nothing less than entrancing. Her voice was angelic and ethereal with the <em>Hyphn<\/em> revealing naturalness together with the enwrapping echo of the recording. The <em>Hyphn<\/em> is a very transparent and revealing speaker that relays recording without editorialization, both energy and dynamics abound across the audible spectrum, apparently without constraint.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">These were but a portion of the tracks I got a chance to listen to during my several hour-long listening session, with the <em>Hyphn<\/em> but it hopefully gives you some idea of my listening experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Pack_Iso_3-Finishes_lr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-41828 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Pack_Iso_3-Finishes_lr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Pack_Iso_3-Finishes_lr.jpg 890w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Pack_Iso_3-Finishes_lr-647x592.jpg 647w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Pack_Iso_3-Finishes_lr-601x550.jpg 601w, https:\/\/www.tedpublications.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/MA_Hyphn_Pack_Iso_3-Finishes_lr-768x703.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Conclusion<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong>The performance that <strong>Monitor Audio<\/strong> has achieved with the <em>Hyphn<\/em> sets a new bar for this British audio product company. Yes, <strong>Monitor Audio<\/strong> has produced many very high performing speakers; their latest <em>Gold Series<\/em> and <em>Platinum Series<\/em> being truly high-end products. Yet, these prior achievements seem like precursors to the <em>Hyphn<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 a speaker capable of delivering delicate nuance through to thunderous majestic climax. Expensive? Sure. Yet, not really compared to the market its positioned to compete. For those that prioritize unrestrained and exacting performance with a unique and forward-looking approach, <strong>Monitor Audio<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Hyphn<\/em> loudspeaker must not be overlooked.
