\"XL_McAire_Low_Angle\"<\/a>Binghamton, N.Y.<\/strong> – McIntosh Laboratory<\/a><\/strong> has begun shipping its first AirPlay-equipped tabletop speaker, the $3,000US McAire<\/em>.<\/p>\n

At that price, the single-chassis stereo speaker system joins a growing selection of very-high-end single-chassis AirPlay<\/em> speakers, including Bang & Olufsen<\/strong>\u2019s recently unveiled $2,699US BeoPlay A9<\/em>, a disc-shaped floor-standing model that can also be hung on a wall.<\/p>\n

McIntosh<\/strong> calls the product an integrated audio system, but whatever it\u2019s called, it features McIntosh<\/strong>\u2019s component-audio cosmetics with black-glass front panel with blue output meters. In fact, it\u2019s component-size, measuring 8-inches by 19.4-inches by 17-inches and weighing 31 pounds. Into that chassis, McAire<\/em> packs a three-way speaker system and embedded Wi-Fi<\/em>. The product doesn\u2019t include tuner or CD player.<\/p>\n

With embedded Wi-Fi<\/em> 802.11 b\/g and AirPlay<\/em>, the speaker streams music wirelessly from Apple<\/strong>\u2019s mobile devices and from a networked PC\u2019s iTunes<\/em> application over a home\u2019s Wi-Fi<\/em> network. The speaker also features Apple<\/strong>-certified USB<\/em> port with 1-amp charging to charge, and stream music from, connected iPods<\/em> and iPhones<\/em>. The USB<\/em> port also connects to USB<\/em> mass-storage devices, including Android<\/em> devices, to play back their music.<\/p>\n

In addition, the port connects to iPad<\/em>s to play back an iPad<\/em>\u2019s song selection, although the port isn\u2019t Apple<\/strong>-certified for quick iPad<\/em> charging.<\/p>\n

The system features two 4-inch woofers, two 2-inch inverted-dome midranges, and two 0.75-inch dome tweeters. Power output was not disclosed.<\/p>\n

Though McAire<\/em> is McIntosh<\/strong>\u2019s first AirPlay<\/em> speaker, it is the company\u2019s second AirPlay<\/em> product. The company also markets the AirPlay<\/em>-equipped MX121<\/em> home theater processor, which costs $6,000US.<\/p>\n

The speaker is available through authorized McIntosh<\/strong> dealers, including Magnolia.<\/p>\n

McIntosh was recently purchased by Fine Sound<\/strong>s from D+M Group<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
