Toronto, September 17, 2012 \u2014\u00a0<\/strong>At downtown Toronto\u2019s Royal Ontario Museum<\/strong> today, Sony<\/strong> announces price and availability of Sony<\/strong> XBR-84X900<\/em>. This 4K\u00a0<\/em>TV, at quadruple the resolution of regular HDTV<\/em>, is Sony Electronic<\/strong>\u2019s first and originally debuted last month at IFA<\/strong> on August\u00a029.<\/p>\n

4K in a Nutshell
\n<\/em><\/strong>The 4K<\/em> image standard is 4\u00a0096\u00a0x 2\u00a0160\u00a0pixels. This represents four times the resolution of 2K<\/em> digital cinema and High Definition<\/em> (1080p)\u00a0 images. The smaller the pixel size and the greater the number of pixels in an image frame results in the ability to display more detailed and realistic images. An additional benefit of the ultra-high resolution offered by 4K<\/em> systems is that their on-screen pixel size is incredibly tiny, approximately one quarter the size of pixels displayed by equivalent HDTV<\/em>. The greater resolution offered by 4K<\/em> enables more detailed, more realistic, more engaging images to be displayed without a visible pixel structure, even when viewed from 1:1\u00a0image distance (or in this case, viewing the 84\u201d TV from 84\u201d away).

\n<\/em><\/strong>This TV is also Sony<\/strong>\u2019s first dive into passive 3D<\/em>. However, because of the 4K<\/em> native resolution, the passive 3D<\/em> can be shown in full 1080p resolution unlike its competitions. Furthermore, this TV also allows full-resolution (1080p) SimulView<\/em> where two gamers can compete against each other using only one screen and each wearing a passive 3D<\/em> glasses.<\/p>\n

Unlike most TVs, Sony<\/strong> utilizes the cavity in the TV to install 10\u00a0units of Live Speaker System<\/em> that produces proper sound without the usually tinny and undefined sound coming from regular TV speakers. More impressively, Sony<\/strong> uses not one, not two, but three X-Reality Pro<\/em> picture engine to upscale any image source to near 4K<\/em> quality. From the demo shown, the upscaled 4K<\/em> picture from regular 1080p Blu-ray<\/em> Disc look mighty amazing and very convincing. Of course, a native 4K<\/em> source pushes the TV\u2019s amazing abilities to its limits.<\/p>\n

It is rather unfortunate that the TV which will retail at $24,999.99 in November only uses Dynamic Edge Lit<\/em> as opposed to full-array LED<\/em> backlighting. On the other hand, the choice of using edge LED<\/em> lighting is to make the TV slim enough and light enough to be installed virtually anywhere without too much of additional structural reinforcement needed.<\/p>\n

Of course, Sony<\/strong>\u2019s usual suite of network connectivity, including the full Sony<\/strong> Entertainment Network<\/strong> suite of services is included with this TV.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
