At the beginning of November 2019, the famous British manufacturer Rega announced the release of a new integrated amplifier. Indeed, the Rega Aethos is interposed between the Elicit-R and the top of the range which is the Osiris. Its circuitry and its case are inspired by those of the Osiris.
The output circuit of the Aethos is based on four transistors per channel that can each provide 16 amps for a power of 160 watts. The advertised power, however, is 156 watts per channel in an impedance of 6 ohms.
The Aethos is a purely analog dual mono concept with no digital circuit. It is powered by a huge toroidal transformer and independent control circuits for the preamplification and amplification stage. The preamplifier stage utilizes discrete components such as Class AFET transistors and polypropylene capacitances throughout the signal path.
The potentiometer is a Blue Velvet RK27 and direct access to the amplifier and the output of the preamplifier are possible through a switch. In order to keep the audio signal as unaltered as possible, the tone controls are excluded and the headphone output is directly connected to the output transistors by a switching relay that mutes the speakers.
At the time of writing, the Canadian price and availability are still unknown, but the Aethos is expected to be just over $6,000 Canadian.
